PRESENTATION 1: MUSIC IN CABO VERDE

I enjoyed learning about the music of Cabo Verde from Chris’ presentation. I learned that they have several different music styles, all of which are merely parts of their cultural identity. I really enjoyed listening to the music samples and YouTube videos that he had prepared for us to watch and listen to. I believe that my favorite part of learning about music in Cabo Verde was the fact that the music carried so much influence and cultural implications on the society that are present today. There were significant effects on immigration and emigration on the culture, specifically on the Cabo Verdean diaspora throughout Europe. I thought that the information was very interesting because, initially, I would not have thought that immigration and emigration would be strongly impacted by the music. My favorite style, based off of the samples played, was Batuque music. I really enjoyed the quick tempo, call-and-response structure, and I love that all of the different instruments blended so well together. I am definitely interested in hearing more music similar to this!
