In the center of downtown Dio de Janeiro is a huge building with architecture unlike any others in the entire city. Shaped like a cone with grey slate concrete outsides, it almost looks like some sort of odd spaceship. However, this building is not what it seems. This building is Catedral Centro do Rio, a huge cathedral with beautiful interior design. What I found so fascinating about this cathedral was, firstly, the fact that while on the outside it appears as very cold with a modern structure, the inside has very typical cathedral architecture and design with enormous glass stain windows. The other thing about this cathedral that stood out to me was the historic information about the city of Rio that I learned from the sculptures and scriptures that are held inside. This one wall told me all about the history of the founding of the city, officially named the City of Saint Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro. He had helped Portugal fight the French, and therefore was rewarded with his name being the official name of the city. During the colonization of the area by the Portuguese, the natives began to die due to foreign illnesses brought overseas from the colonization just like what occurred to the Indian natives here in America. With them dying, the Portuguese had no one to perform their Manuel labor for them. Their new plan became to bring in slaves from Africa (contemporary Afro-Brasilians). This story of how the city came to be was what really fascinated me, and was my favorite part of visiting this Cathedral. It was a truly and beautifully unique and sacred place, and definitely a must when in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
