The Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been a trending destination on my Travel Pinterest board for over two years. Today I was able to finally see the beautiful wonders of the botanical garden for myself in person, and it was everything that I thought it would be and more. Not only did I love seeing the beautiful scenery in the garden, but I was able to realize what a great presence nature and geography has and the effect that they have on the economic growth of the country. Relating this trip to the course readings, we can also see in Spilt Milk how the main character has been whiteness to the changing of the city over a long period of time. His family was very wealthy having a farm, and at that time in Rio, wealth meant social stature. He was of a very long line of wealth, and with that he expected to be treated a certain way, loved down near the coasts where the wealthier people lived, etc. the ecosystem, nature, gardening, etc. had a huge impact of the socio and economical development of Rio and Brazil as a whole. With that being said, it was great to see how well they protect and preserve the beautiful nature that surrounds the chaos of the city.
